Rug Structure: What is a warp?: "Rug Structure: What is a warp?
Warps are the strands that run from top to bottom on the loom.
Here we can see the progression of how a rug is woven. These pictures are of a small pile bag woven by American weaver Mark Traxler. First Mark strings the loom with cotton strands. Then he weaves the rug on the foundation of those strands. They are the warp. As we can see below when the rug is removed from the loom the warps become the fringe.

Rug Structure: What is a weft?: "Rug Structure: What is a weft?
Wefts are the strands that run from side to side on the loom.
The weaver inserts weft after each row of knots. Most rugs have 2 shots of weft after each row of knots but we see one in Hamadan rugs and more in some rugs. "

Elusive Quarry, Very Like a Whale
By MICHELLE SLATALLA
SUPPOSE there was a time when even Captain Ahab managed to temporarily suppress his urge to pursue Moby-Dick. For a while I gave up trying to buy an antique Oriental rug.
But aside from the peg leg, Ahab and I have much in common. His obsession eventually led him back to sea on an ill-fated expedition. Mine sent me shopping online.
In the months since I last wrote about my search, my goal has remained clear: to buy a better rug than I could otherwise afford by paying a below-market price.
While I was willing to pay a substantial amount for a quality rug, I turned my back on the methods of shopping that had pointed me toward the realm of retail prices. I quit borrowing rugs from stores to test in my living room. And no more real-life auctions where I became paralyzed by indecision as other bidders stared.
Instead I spent the spring reading rug collectors' posts at message boards like spongobongo.com,"

A bit about myself...
August, 2002
I have been in the Oriental rug business for over 32 years. Born in Richmond, Indiana, I then moved to Indianapolis with my family as a young boy. After graduating from Arlington High School I went to work for Ashjian Rug Cleaning Co. This is where I became interested in these highly beautiful and durable rugs.
I learned how to clean and repair them, and then began studying the many different kinds of rugs from around the world. Older rugs became my passion. I studied and became an expert in the field of Antique and Semi-Antique Oriental Rugs.
I worked for Kerman Rug Co. for 17 years, and then opened my own retail store. After 10 years I closed the store to deal only in Antique and Semi-Antique Oriental Rugs, and to be home with my young children to watch them grow up."

La Miniature En Orient Plate 46: Bears: "The date that Kuhnel assigned to this piece seems to be at least 50 years too early. In this we see a style of art that developed in the 15th century and came into it's own in the sixteenth century. Comparing how the bear is drawn and the representation of leaves and floral forms I feel an attribution of Khorasan (Mashad or Sabzavar) 3rd quarter 16th century is most probable. In the picture to the left we can see proportion of the trunk and how the two main branches cross back across each other. This is a style we see in other pictures including the margin decorations of Portrait of a Seated Flautist. "
